VICTORIA DAY HOLIDAY IN CANADA IS MONDAY MAY 21st in 2012

Many Canadians and most of my American friends may not know why we celebrate this Holiday time in Canada. It gets confusing with all the names previous generations have called the Holiday. Empire Day,Dominion Day, Commonwealth Day and Victoria Day...and known by many as the May 24th Long weekend.

So I thought I would help explain the May Holiday in Canada...well most of Canada. All Except the Atlantic Provinces.

I looked up the holiday history on the Federal Government web site listed under Victoria Day.....So most of my source of explanation is from the Canadian Federal Government web site.

Victoria Day is a Celebration or holiday in most of Canada for Britain's Queen Victoria’s Birthday. May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845.


I remember this holiday time for the Parade we have always had in my lifetime and always thought it was on May 24th. In my early teens I was always marching in the Parade as a young army Cadet, I was Cadet in the 16th Scottish Regiment from 13-16 years of age.

As you well know not every Monday falls on May the 24th...According to the Government source the Holiday always falls on the Monday preceding May 25. And is known today as Victoria Day

in Victoria BC.....we refer to our long Weekend as the 24th of May Holiday weekend and our Monday Parade as the Victoria Day Parade...And it usually falls on the weekend preceding the United States Memorial Day Holiday weekend....

Confusing, we you’re not alone.

We had a Great Breakfast At The Royal Roads Cafe with our In-laws (Jane’s Brother and Sister in-law) . After breakfast we decided drop into The Little Elf Garden Center at 1062 Goldstream Ave in Langford to Shop for Annuals and Pre-Annuals for our Gardens.

Rhododendrons at Little Elf Garden CentreAs we entered the Garden Center we passed by a Huge Growth of mature Rhododendron Plants in Full Bloom...Love these Plants.

I tried to photograph a Bubble Bee at work but he was too busy jumping from Flower to Flower Drunk with Excitement of finding so many Rhodo’s in Bloom.

Be sure to check the Great annual and pre-annual Flower Selections at Lynns Little Elf Garden Center.
