1890 CRAIGDARROCK CASTLE CHRISTMAS TOUR.
Just before Christmas we booked reservations to tour Craigdarrock Castle which was decorated in a 1890 Christmas theme, the Castle is designated a National Historic site. The Castle located in the heart of the Rockland District of Victoria BC,
I took along my Casio Camera to capture some of the history in Colour and Black and White photos for the sideshow below..
The Castle Built in 1890 by Coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. Robert Dunsmuir was the wealthiest man in British Columbia. He died in 1889, just months before Craigdarroch Castle was completed. He left his entire estate to his wife Joan, who lived in the castle until her death in 1908. Their immense fortune is reflected in the four floors of Stained Glass windows, intricate woodwork, and ornate Victoria era furnishing. The Castle's Estate extended over 28 acres and speaks of the very rich lifestyle at the end of the 19th century.
The Castle is now owned by a not-for -profit charity, conservation of this national treasure is funded almost exclusively from revenues contributed by the 150,000 annual visitors.
History of Craigdarroch Castle .... a historic, Victorian-era Châteauesque mansion comprising 39 rooms and over 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2). The four-story Craigdarrcoh Castle still has lavish furnishings from the 1890s and is known for its stained-glass and intricate woodwork.
